UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES:

The Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance(BA) degree is designed for students who wish to acquire a solid musical background and sound technical training on the guitar within a liberal arts curriculum.

The Bachelor of Science in Music Performance(BS) degree is designed for students who wish to acquire a solid musical background and sound technical training on the guitar within a science curriculum.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education (BME) degree is designed for music education students planning a career in school teaching and using the guitar as their major performance medium.

The Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance (BM) degree is designed for the aspiring musician who shows outstanding talent and preparation upon entering the program. It is open to select students with a high musical and performance ability.

• Course Requirements: In addition to individual guitar lessons, the undergraduate classical guitar major may have to take Guitar Ensemble, Classical Guitar Repertoire, Classical Guitar Pedagogy, core music courses and university required courses as part of the degree program, each performance major must give a senior recital and participate in other instrumental groups in addition to the Ensemble-Classical Guitar.

GRADUATE DEGREES:

The Masters of Music Education (MME) degree is designed for music education students planning a career in school teaching and using the classical guitar as their performance medium.

The Master of Music in Guitar Performance (MM) degree is designed for the aspiring guitarist who shows outstanding talent and preparation upon entering the program. It is open to students who have attained a high academic average and classical guitar performance ability.

The Doctor of Music in Guitar Performance (DMA) degree program is designed for the aspiring concert artist and is also serious in a career in higher education, the student must show outstanding talent and preparation upon entering the program. It is open to students who have attained a high academic average and classical guitar performance ability.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

• Guitar Repertoire (346) is a course on literature for the classical guitar beginning with music for the sixteenth century vihuela, continuing through the twentieth century repertoire. Lute music, tablatures, and transcription procedures are also covered.
• Guitar Pedagogy (340) is a survey of methods and materials for private and classroom teaching. Historical and contemporary tutors are examined. Consideration is given to organizational and communicative teaching techniques, as well as to the evaluation of aims and results. It is required that students observe one semester of guitar class (a functional course for non guitar majors).
• Ensemble-Classical Guitar ( 270, 572)for undergraduates (and Advanced Ensemble-Classical Guitar for graduate students) is required of all classical guitar majors for all the semesters of their residence at the School of Music. This course involves the preparation and performance of representative literature for two, three, and four guitars, chamber music for guitar and voice, and guitar with other instruments.
• Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Guitar Classes  ( 040, 076, 140)are applied courses in the development of basic guitar skills. The emphasis is upon playing classical guitar and folk styles. The courses review current published methods and materials. They are open to non-music majors. These courses are only offered on certain semesters.
• Guitar Lessons ( 076, 240, 440, 540, 740) are individual instruction for students who have some background in music and/or previous guitar instruction as prerequisite, mostly for music and/or guitar majors.
• Guitar Lessons (no credit) are also available through the student teaching teaching division, they are open to everyone.
