CHORD ROOTS

The relationship between chord roots determine to a great extent the relative strength or weakness of a harmonic progression. The "circle progression" shown below as the circle of ascending fourths (vs. the classical version of the circle of ascending 5ths) depicts the strongest root movement in directional harmony.

The root names are listed three times. Try to anticipate the next note name before you see it on the screen. It is important to memorize these root relationships! Many standard jazz progressions are based on circle progressions.
